About
Chatuchak (or "JJ") Weekend Market is one of the largest markets on earth — roughly 15,000 stalls spread across 27 numbered sections, drawing over 200,000 visitors on a typical Saturday. It runs Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 6pm. A handful of plant and wholesale sections also open Wednesday and Thursday mornings; the wholesale-only Friday session runs 6pm to midnight.
The market is loosely zoned. Sections 22–26 carry vintage clothes, denim, and sneakers. Sections 7 and 8 hold contemporary Thai art and the better design-led labels. Sections 2–4 are pet supplies and exotics — including the live-animal blocks that some visitors prefer to skip on welfare grounds. The food court at the centre is a cross-section of regional Thai cooking; the better street stalls cluster in the lanes off section 26 and 27.
Practical: take BTS to Mo Chit (exit 1) or MRT to Chatuchak Park (exit 1) — both drop you at the same entrance. Bring cash; many smaller stalls don't accept cards or QR. Wear something light and bring water — the inside of the market is at least 4–5°C hotter than the surrounding street. Most regulars set a meeting point (Section 8 clock tower is the classic) because phone signal inside the densest sections is unreliable. Plan 3–4 hours minimum; leave by 5pm to beat the closing rush.
If you want a quieter version, the adjacent JJ Mall (air-conditioned, indoor, partially open weekdays) carries some of the same vendors at slightly higher prices.
Best time to visit
Saturday or Sunday from opening until 14:00
Tips
Go early (08:30) or late afternoon. Friday night has a smaller preview market. Take a photo of your entry point — it's easy to get lost.
