About
Pak Khlong Talat is Bangkok's main wholesale flower market, running essentially 24 hours a day along the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya, just south of the Grand Palace. It is the city's primary supply node for marigolds, orchids, jasmine, lotus, roses, and the bouquets you see at temple offerings, hotel reception desks, restaurants, and the seasonal Loy Krathong floats.
The market peaks twice a day. The first wave runs from 2am to 6am, when overnight trucks from the upcountry growers unload fresh stock and the wholesale buyers move through to assemble the morning's deliveries. The second wave runs late afternoon as the same buyers restock for the next day. Between those windows the market thins out but never quite closes — the smaller retail stalls along Chakkraphet Road stay open through the day for walk-up tourists and locals buying flowers for shrines.
The visual density is the draw. Marigold mountains, jasmine garlands hanging in bunches of fifty, orchid stems wrapped in newspaper, lotus pods piled in baskets. The ground is wet, the air smells of jasmine and exhaust, and the scale is hard to overstate.
Practical: walking distance from the Grand Palace and Wat Pho — the easiest add-on to a temple morning if you wake up early enough to catch the 5am peak. Better yet on the way back from a late dinner in Yaowarat. No admission, no dress code; bring small bills if you want to buy a single bouquet.
